The Election as Pope in the Prison Camp
After being interned in a prison camp near Tripoli, Clamence is elected 'pope' by his fellow prisoners, led by a young, faith-filled man named Du Guesclin. The election is a joke, but Clamence takes on the role with increasing seriousness, becoming a group leader and administering the camp's scarce water supply. He is forced to make difficult decisions, favoring some prisoners over others, and eventually drinks the water of a dying comrade, justifying it as necessary for his own survival to help others.
