Clamence's Provocative Behavior
In a desperate attempt to shatter his flattering reputation and provoke judgment, Clamence engages in a series of provocative acts. He gives a lecture to young lawyers where he defends the thief by accusing the honest man. He begins to use the word 'God' in court, shocking his atheist colleagues. He writes an 'Ode to the Police' and an 'Apotheosis of the Guillotine.' These efforts, however, fail to disarm the laughter he hears or to bring him the absolution he seeks.
