during World War II
The Dog and the German Soldier
Clamence recounts an incident at the Châtelet station in Paris during the German occupation. A friendly dog approaches him, but then follows a German soldier instead. Clamence feels a surge of patriotic rage, which convinces him that he is, in fact, a patriot. This realization leads him to travel to the Southern Zone of France to join the French Resistance, though he ultimately hesitates, finding the underground work unsuited to his temperament.
