Farid
ShantaramFarid, known as the Fixer, is a capable young member of Abdel Khader Khan’s criminal world whose fierce loyalty makes him both an effective problem-solver and a trusted companion to Lin. His trajectory links the violence of the gang’s struggle to the quieter work of friendship: after Khader’s death, Farid becomes dangerously consumed by violence, but time spent working with Lin helps him regain his composure.
Background and Identity
When Lin first encounters Farid at Khader Khan’s mafia council, Farid is shy but capable. Over the next three years, he hardens into a fearless, angry young man whose loyalty occupies a defining place in his life. The transformation is not presented as a simple rise in status: Farid’s toughness brings him into the inner circle, but it also leaves him vulnerable to the violence and grief that follow Khader’s death.
Farid’s past includes an early responsibility that helps explain the weight he places on loyalty. After his parents died in a cholera-infested slum, he raised his six much younger brothers and sisters alone. The account identifies this responsibility alongside his later work as a fixer, presenting a young man accustomed to carrying other people’s needs as well as solving the problems assigned to him.
Work and the Crisis After Khader’s Death
Farid’s reputation rests on his ability to settle problems through fear and force. After Khader dies and the gang moves against Abdul Ghani’s men, that capacity becomes troubling: Farid grows wild, and Salman Mustaan worries that he has begun to enjoy the violence rather than merely use it as a tool. Salman speaks to him about keeping violent methods far down the list of options, but Farid continues in the same direction.
Farid’s loyalty also places him in the group that confronts Jeetudada after Jeetu boasts that he is the real Sapna and threatens Abdel Khader Khan. Farid accompanies Khader, Nazeer, Khaled Ansari, and the others to the President Hotel, where a gunfight takes place. Salman’s account establishes Farid’s presence in the operation, but does not single out any particular action by him during the confrontation.
Lin and the Change in Farid
When Johnny Cigar and Kishore turn down Lin’s offers of work, Salman assigns Farid and Andrew Ferreira to work with him. Andrew remains more attached to the company of his younger gangster friends, while Farid spends most days and many nights alongside Lin. The two become close because of that sustained companionship, and Lin says plainly that he likes Farid and is glad they have become friends.
Salman’s assignment is also an intervention. He believes Farid was near a breaking point after Khader’s death and the campaign against Ghani’s men, and places him with Lin after his own attempt to curb Farid’s violence fails. Six months later, Salman sees Farid as happier and more relaxed. Lin’s presence does not erase Farid’s past or his capacity for violence; the change described is a regained measure of calm within a life still shaped by the criminal organization.
Loyalty and Narrative Role
Farid belongs to the new generation of mafia leaders and operators alongside Sanjay, Andrew, Amir, Faisal, and Salman Mustaan. Within that group he is identified as the Fixer, a role associated with solving problems through fear and fire. Yet the narrative also places him among Lin’s brothers in their criminal brotherhood: they are bound by loyalty, obligation, and a willingness to come when one of their own needs them.
Lin describes this bond as reciprocal rather than merely protective. Farid and the others know that Lin went with Khader when Khader called him into the war; Lin, in turn, knows he can count on them. Farid’s importance thus rests on two connected forms of reliability: he is a feared fixer within the gang and a friend whose sustained closeness with Lin offers a counterweight to the violent habits that once threatened to define him.
