Lieutenant Tom Horner

Strangers

Lieutenant Tom Horner is Leland Falkirk’s armed second-in-command at Thunder Hill, entrusted with controlling the prisoners during the operation to destroy the Thunder Hill Depository. In the final confrontation, his machine gun makes him an immediate threat; Dom Corvaisis’s power abruptly strips it from his hands, turning Horner from an enforcer into a disarmed captive.

Position at Thunder Hill

When Falkirk orders the other DERO men back to Shenkfield, he leaves the prisoners under the control of himself and one other man. That responsibility falls to Horner because he is second-in-command. Falkirk’s plan is to keep the prisoners contained and destroy the Depository, and he later reveals that two backpack nuclear weapons are in place: one outside the entrance and another in the main chamber.

Horner is not simply part of the larger armed company. Falkirk’s decision to leave him with the prisoners makes him a key participant in the operation’s final stage. The delegation also exposes Falkirk’s distrust: after Horner has been alone with people who might be contaminated, Falkirk decides he can no longer trust him.

The prisoners and the armed confrontation

At the entrance to Thunder Hill Depository, Horner’s machine gun discourages the witnesses and Parker Faine from trying to flee or resist. He later appears in the chamber carrying a submachine gun, alone behind the last of the witnesses. Miles Bennell had expected Falkirk to arrive with many soldiers, but Horner is the only armed man who enters at that point. He announces that Falkirk will follow shortly.

As the prisoners are drawn toward the starship, General Bob Alvarado challenges Horner for bringing an automatic weapon into the chamber ready to fire. Alvarado points out the danger of a burst ricocheting off the rock walls and killing everyone present, including Horner. The warning makes the weapon’s danger immediate even before it is used: in the enclosed chamber, it threatens the armed men and prisoners alike.

Disarmament and narrative role

With less than three minutes remaining before the two nuclear weapons are due to destroy the group, Falkirk taunts the witnesses about their ability to change him. Then both weapons are wrenched out of their owners’ hands. Horner screams as his gun is torn away; it spins through the air and lands beside Jack Twist, while the other weapon falls at Ernie Block’s feet. Both men take up the guns and cover Horner and Falkirk.

The abrupt reversal removes Horner’s practical advantage at the moment when the prisoners are most vulnerable. Dom Corvaisis identifies himself as the person responsible, admitting that he did not know he could do it until he had to. Horner’s role in the available account ends with his weapon in the hands of the witnesses; no further outcome for him is established. His brief but consequential presence links Falkirk’s military control of the prisoners to the sudden shift in power that makes resistance possible.
