Battle of the oasis

As Santiago predicted, five hundred armed tribesmen attack the oasis. The men of the oasis, forewarned, ambush and defeat them, killing all but the commander. The commander is hanged for violating the neutrality of the oasis. The tribal chieftain rewards Santiago with fifty pieces of gold and offers him a position as counselor, but Santiago declines, knowing he must continue his journey.
