Santiago works for the crystal merchant

Penniless, Santiago finds work at a crystal shop owned by a melancholy old merchant. He cleans the crystal and attracts customers, revitalizing the failing business. The merchant, who has long dreamed of making a pilgrimage to Mecca but fears realizing it, becomes a mentor figure. Santiago works for nearly a year, saving money to either return to Spain and buy sheep or continue his quest.
