Santiago's arrival in Tangier and robbery
Santiago crosses the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier, Morocco. He is immediately overwhelmed by the foreign culture and language. A young, Spanish-speaking Arab offers to guide him to the Pyramids, but after Santiago shows him his money, the thief leads him into a crowded market and disappears with all his funds. Santiago is left destitute, weeping in the empty marketplace, and questions his decision to follow his dream.
