Encounter with the alchemist

That night, Santiago is confronted by a mysterious, black-clad horseman with a falcon—the alchemist. The alchemist tests Santiago's courage and knowledge of the Language of the World. He tells Santiago that he must continue his quest and that he will guide him across the desert. This meeting marks the beginning of Santiago's direct apprenticeship with the alchemist.
