Daenerys first encounters this mark after the death of Stalwart Shield, an Unsullied soldier found in an alley with a harpy drawn on the bricks in his own blood. The pattern repeats relentlessly: freedmen, former slaves, and anyone who collaborates with the dragon queen are cut down at night, and the harpy is left beside the bodies, chalked on pavement or scratched into walls, sometimes accompanied by slogans such as "Dragons must die" or "Death to Daenerys."

Symbolism and Meaning

The harpy represents the old Ghiscari order that Daenerys overthrew. In Meereenese iconography, the harpy was the city's ancient symbol, a winged creature with a woman's face and the body of a bird of prey, evoking both the grace and the predatory nature of the slaver nobility.
