Yurkhaz zo Yunzak, the Supreme Commander of the Armies and Allies of Yunkai, was a figurehead of the slaver coalition besieging Meereen. Bent-backed, wrinkled, and toothless, he was so frail that he had to be carried to the feast in the Great Pyramid by two strapping slaves. His advanced age and physical decrepitude made him a symbol of the old Ghiscari order rather than a dynamic military leader; the Yunkish lords who served under him were a fractious collection of petty commanders, each with his own slave soldiers and ambitions, and the real power lay with the council of masters rather than with Yurkhaz himself.

Role in the Siege and the Feast

Yurkhaz zo Yunzak was the nominal head of the Yunkish host that ringed Meereen after Daenerys Targaryen's conquest. He was present at the celebratory feast hosted by King Hizdahr zo Loraq in the Great Pyramid, a feast meant to seal the peace between Meereen and Yunkai. At that feast, he was seated in a place of honor, and his presence, along with that of other Yunkish lords and sellsword captains, was meant to demonstrate the success of the peace accords. He was described as being so old that he might have been alive during Aegon's Conquest, a testament to the entrenched, ancient nature of the slave-owning aristocracy he represented.

Death and Its Consequences

Yurkhaz zo Yunzak met his end not in battle but by accident during the pandemonium that erupted when Drogon descended into Daznak's Pit. As the crowd panicked and fled, the old supreme commander stumbled on the steps and was crushed beneath the feet of his own slaves and companions, or perhaps his heart burst in terror. His death, though accidental, became a political weapon. The Yunkai'i used it as a pretext to break the fragile peace, demanding blood for blood. They executed the hostage Admiral Groleo and sent his head to King Hizdahr, insisting that the dragons must be destroyed as a condition for any future peace. Yurkhaz's death thus served as the catalyst for the collapse of the truce and the resumption of open hostilities, transforming a frail old man's accidental demise into a casus belli that reshaped the war for Slaver's Bay.
