The Lightning Lord

The Lightning Lord is the name by which Beric Dondarrion, Lord of Blackhaven, came to be known during the War of the Five Kings. A stormlands knight of House Dondarrion, he was sent by Eddard Stark to bring the King's justice to Ser Gregor Clegane, but the mission scattered his force and drove him into outlawry. In the riverlands he became the leader of a band of outlaws, the brotherhood without banners, fighting a shadow war against Lannister forces and their allies. His most extraordinary trait was his repeated death and resurrection: Thoros of Myr, a red priest of R'hllor, brought him back from the dead six times, each revival costing Beric a piece of his memory and humanity. He was known for his lightning-quick strikes against supply trains and patrols, hence his sobriquet, and for his signature weapon, a flaming sword ignited by Thoros's prayers. His final act was to give up his own life-force to resurrect Catelyn Stark, who had been murdered at the Red Wedding, passing the flame of his unnatural life into her corpse and dying a true death himself.

Identity and Background

Beric Dondarrion was the Lord of Blackhaven, a castle in the stormlands, and a bannerman to House Baratheon. He was a young, handsome, and chivalrous knight, known for his courage and sense of justice. When Eddard Stark, as Hand of the King, ordered the arrest of Ser Gregor Clegane for ravaging the riverlands, Beric volunteered to lead the mission. He rode south with a hundred men, including Thoros of Myr, but was ambushed and killed by Gregor Clegane near the Mummer's Ford. Thoros, who had never successfully performed any magic, spoke the words of the last kiss over Beric's body, and the red god R'hllor returned him to life. This was the first of his many resurrections.

Life as an Outlaw Leader

After his resurrection, Beric became the leader of the brotherhood without banners, a band of outlaws that included Thoros, the archer Anguy, the knight Harwin, and later the Hound, Sandor Clegane. They operated in the riverlands, attacking Lannister supply lines, freeing prisoners, and dispensing a rough form of justice. Beric's lightning-fast raids earned him the name "the Lightning Lord." He was known for his flaming sword, which Thoros would set ablaze with a prayer, and for his unwavering commitment to protecting the smallfolk. He was also a skilled duelist, besting the Hound in single combat, though he spared his life. His repeated deaths and resurrections took a toll on him: he lost the ability to remember his past clearly, his wounds healed imperfectly, and he grew increasingly detached from the living world.

Death and Legacy

Beric's final act was to give his life to resurrect Catelyn Stark. After the Red Wedding, the brotherhood found Catelyn's body in the river, and Beric, knowing that his own time was short, willingly surrendered the flame of life that Thoros had kindled in him. He kissed Catelyn's lips, and the fire passed from him into her, reviving her as a vengeful, undead creature known as Lady Stoneheart. Beric died a true death, his body finally at rest. His legacy lived on in the brotherhood, which continued to fight under Lady Stoneheart's command, and in the legend of the Lightning Lord, a symbol of resistance against tyranny in the riverlands.
