Ten Towers is the stronghold of House Harlaw on the island of Harlaw, one of the major islands of the Iron Islands. It is the seat of Lord Rodrik Harlaw, a man known throughout the isles as "the Reader" for his devotion to books and history, a trait that sets him apart from the reaving culture of his people. The castle is not a massive fortress but a sprawling, comfortable structure, its most famous feature being its extensive library, which contains one of the largest collections of books and scrolls in the islands.

Identity and Setting

Ten Towers is situated on the western coast of Harlaw, overlooking the sea. Its name derives from the ten towers that rise from its walls, though the castle is more a sprawling manse than a martial stronghold. The main tower, where Lord Rodrik keeps his chambers and library, is the tallest. The castle's design reflects the personality of its lord: it is a place of quiet contemplation rather than martial preparation, filled with the scent of old parchment and salt air. The surrounding lands are fertile, providing the castle with ample food, a luxury in the often-barren Iron Islands.

Role in the Kingsmoot and Aftermath

Ten Towers served as a crucial waypoint for Asha Greyjoy after the kingsmoot on Old Wyk. Following her defeat by her uncle Euron, Asha sailed to Ten Towers to bid farewell to her mother, Lady Alannys, who was living there in a state of mental decline, often asking for her lost son Theon. Lord Rodrik, Asha's maternal uncle, urged her to flee the islands before Euron could move against her, warning that her claim to the Seastone Chair made her a danger to the Crow's Eye. "Go, Asha," he told her. "Once Euron has been crowned, he'll look for you. You dare not let his eye fall upon you." He refused to set Harlaw against Harlaw by openly supporting her, but he provided her with the means to escape, advising her to leave before dawn.

A Refuge and a Prison

While at Ten Towers, Asha also learned of her forced marriage to Erik Ironmaker, a union orchestrated by Euron to neutralize her as a political threat and secure the regency of the Iron Islands in his absence. The castle thus became a place of bitter tidings as well as a temporary sanctuary. It was from Ten Towers that Asha set sail for Deepwood Motte, her last attempt to carve out a kingdom of her own in the north. The castle itself remained under Lord Rodrik's quiet, scholarly rule, a bastion of the Old Way's intellectual counterpoint, where the past was studied rather than merely plundered.
