Gulf of Grief
The Gulf of Grief is a stretch of sea lying off the coast of Slaver's Bay, east of the Smoking Sea and the ruined Valyrian peninsula, and south of the city of Meereen. It forms the final leg of the sea route from the Free Cities to Slaver's Bay, a passage that autumn storms and war have made notoriously dangerous. For the ships that attempt it, the gulf is less a destination than an ordeal—a body of water that tests the seaworthiness of vessels and the resolve of their crews before they can reach the blockaded waters off Meereen.
The Storm and the Wreck of the Selaesori Qhoran
The Gulf of Grief is the site where the cog Selaesori Qhoran, carrying Tyrion Lannister, Jorah Mormont, the dwarf Penny, and the red priest Moqorro, meets its ruin. After days of calm, a storm of extraordinary violence descends upon the ship. Tyrion observes the western sky turning a sickly green, then grey, then black, and a wall of churning clouds looming behind them. The captain changes course to try to escape the storm's path, but the effort is futile; the gulf's weather is too vast. The mast bursts with a crack, and the ship is left a broken hulk, listing to port, its hull sprung in dozens of places, its hold awash. Nine men are lost, including Moqorro himself, who is swept overboard. The ship drifts for nineteen days afterward, food and water dwindling, as the survivors face starvation and the threat of being eaten by one another. The storm in the Gulf of Grief thus transforms a voyage of purpose into a desperate struggle for survival, scattering the company and nearly killing the red priest who will later play a crucial role in Victarion Greyjoy's fleet.
Victarion's Passage and the Gathering of the Iron Fleet
Months later, the Gulf of Grief becomes the staging ground for Victarion Greyjoy's approach to Meereen. After the storms that scattered the Iron Fleet, Victarion gathers his remaining ships off the Isle of Cedars and then sails north through the gulf. The waters here are thick with enemy shipping; Victarion captures multiple prizes in the gulf, including the Ghiscari Dawn, the Dove, and the Willing Maiden, renaming them and adding them to his fleet. The gulf serves as the corridor through which the ironborn pass from the open sea into the confined waters off Meereen, where the Yunkish blockade awaits. It is here that Victarion's wizard, Moqorro—rescued from the same gulf after the Selaesori Qhoran's wreck—predicts the locations of enemy ships and guides the fleet toward its confrontation with the slavers. The Gulf of Grief, therefore, is not merely a geographical feature but a narrative space where the fates of Tyrion's and Victarion's voyages intersect, a place of destruction and of gathering strength, where storms and war alike test those who dare to cross it.
