Bridge of Dream

The Bridge of Dream is a shattered stone bridge that spans the Rhoyne in the region known as the Sorrows, a stretch of river haunted by the stone men—victims of greyscale driven mad by their affliction. The bridge is part of the drowned city of Chroyane, once called the festival city, and connects the Palace of Sorrow (formerly the Palace of Love) to the river's western bank. Pale stone arches, many collapsed, march off into the perpetual fog, and the broad wooden span has rotted through. Lamps along the bridge still glow, and stone men shuffle aimlessly around them, some naked, others clad in shrouds. The bridge is a place of despair and death, where the whispering dead are said to hate the warm and quick.

Appearance and Atmosphere

The Bridge of Dream is a broken and desolate structure. Half of its arches have collapsed, pulled down by the weight of grey moss and thick black vines that snake upward from the water. The fog that clings to the Sorrows is unnatural, stinking of sorcery, and the bridge is a focal point for the misery of the place. Stone men moan and mutter beneath flickering lamps, and the air is rank with decay. The bridge is a threshold between the living world and a realm of madness and disease.

The Shy Maid's Passage

When the poleboat Shy Maid approaches the bridge, the crew is warned by Griff to expect stone men who may wail but are unlikely to molest them, though they are dangerous near the end of their madness. The fog is meant to hide the boat, but the current proves treacherous. As the boat passes beneath the bridge, the water foams angrily, and the crew must pole off a pier to avoid crashing. The passage is tense but initially successful, and the boat clears the bridge.

The Supernatural Return

After the Shy Maid has left the bridge behind, the river inexplicably brings them back to it. Despite the river only running one way, the boat drifts inexorably toward the Bridge of Dream again. The stone men on the span begin to wail and point. The current has the boat in its teeth, and it is carried back under the bridge. During this second, violent passage, stone men crash down onto the boat. One lands on the cabin roof, another by the tiller. The crew fights them off with poles, torches, and swords. Griff cuts off one stone man's arm, and Duck knocks another into the river. A third stone man, a Summer Islander, leaps aboard and attacks Young Griff. Tyrion Lannister intervenes, shoving the stone man overboard, but is dragged into the river himself. He nearly drowns before being pulled out by Griff.

Narrative Role and Significance

The Bridge of Dream serves as a key location in Tyrion Lannister's journey down the Rhoyne, marking the most dangerous and supernatural part of the passage through the Sorrows. It is a place where the laws of nature are suspended, and the boundary between the living and the cursed dead is thin. The bridge's haunting of the Shy Maid—its supernatural return—underscores the theme of inescapable fate and the pervasive decay of the old world. The attack by the stone men forces Tyrion into a moment of self-sacrifice, revealing a flicker of heroism beneath his cynicism, and it also exposes the secret of Young Griff's identity when Tyrion's actions and words force the boy to confront his true nature.
