The Sky Cells

The Sky Cells are the highest prison cells in the Eyrie, the mountain fortress of House Arryn. Unlike conventional dungeons, they are open to the sky on one side, with no bars or walls to prevent a fall—only a sheer drop of hundreds of feet. The cells are designed to break a prisoner's will through vertigo and exposure rather than chains or torture. Tyrion Lannister was confined in a Sky Cell during his imprisonment in the Eyrie, accused of conspiring to murder Jon Arryn. The cell's floor sloped toward the open edge, so that any movement in sleep risked sliding into the abyss. The cold wind and the constant sight of the distant valley below created a psychological torment that Tyrion later recalled with visceral dread. The Sky Cells embody the Eyrie's reputation for impregnable isolation and the Arryn tradition of "justice" through fear rather than bloodshed. They function as a spatial metaphor for the precariousness of power in the Vale: those who fall from favor have nowhere to land. The cells appear only in Tyrion's chapters during his captivity, but their memory haunts him long after his escape, symbolizing the arbitrary cruelty of the world he inhabits.
