Estermont
Estermont is a substantial island lying off the coast of Cape Wrath in the stormlands, its interior covered with thick forests and its shores indented by rocky coves and small harbors. The island is the seat of House Estermont, an ancient but not especially powerful family whose blood ties to the royal House Baratheon—King Robert's mother was a Estermont—have given it a certain prominence at court. The castle of Greenstone, the family's stronghold, commands the island's main anchorage and serves as the administrative center for the scattered fishing villages and farming hamlets that dot the coast.
The Golden Company's Landing
During the autumn of the War of the Five Kings, Estermont becomes an unexpected landing site for elements of the Golden Company, the sellsword army that has crossed the narrow sea to press the claim of a young man calling himself Aegon Targaryen. The company's ships, hired in Volantis, scatter in storms during the voyage; one group, commanded by the sellsword captain Marq Mandrake, is put ashore on Estermont rather than at the intended landing zone on Cape Wrath. Mandrake's force, numbering close to five hundred men, quickly overruns Greenstone and secures the island. The castle's fall is reported to the Golden Company's leadership by raven, and Jon Connington, the exiled lord who serves as the prince's guardian and Hand, receives the news with a mixture of satisfaction and strategic calculation.
Strategic Significance and Hostages
Connington recognizes that the capture of Estermont provides the Golden Company with a useful secondary base and a source of hostages. House Estermont, through its blood ties to both the late King Robert Baratheon and the pretender Stannis Baratheon, is a family of royal connections; its captured members can be held for ransom or used as bargaining chips. Connington orders Mandrake to leave a garrison on the island and to bring the rest of his men, along with any noble captives, across the water to Cape Wrath to reinforce the main army. The island thus serves as a stepping-stone in the company's campaign to establish a foothold in the stormlands, though its ultimate fate—whether it remains in sellsword hands or is retaken by loyalist forces—is left unresolved as the narrative moves elsewhere.
