Grindcorn Mill
Grindcorn Mill was a valuable source of tax revenue in the riverlands, one of several mills whose grinding fees provided a steady income for whichever lord controlled them. During the negotiations at Raventree Hall, after Lord Tytos Blackwood had yielded to Jaime Lannister and agreed to confess his treason and swear fealty to the Iron Throne, the question of territorial concessions arose. Jaime produced a map showing the lands that Lord Jonos Bracken demanded as recompense for his service against the Blackwoods. Among the villages, ridges, and ruins listed was Grindcorn Mill.
The Negotiation
Lord Tytos initially offered only Woodhedge, Crossbow Ridge, and Buckle—a ruin, a ridge, and a few hovels—as the price of his rebellion. Jaime pressed him to give more, warning that Bracken would want at least one mill. "Lord's Mill, then. Grindcorn is ours," Tytos replied, drawing a clear line: he would surrender Lord's Mill but not Grindcorn. Jaime accepted the distinction, and the agreement was sealed with the addition of the village of Honeytree and its hives. The mill thus remained in Blackwood hands, a small victory for Tytos within a larger defeat.
Significance
The dispute over Grindcorn Mill was a microcosm of the ancient enmity between House Bracken and House Blackwood, a feud that had persisted for thousands of years over lands, crowns, and slights both real and remembered. The mill itself was not strategically vital, but its ownership carried symbolic weight: it represented the kind of local, grinding conflict that outlasted kings and kingdoms. Jaime Lannister, mediating the settlement, found the whole quarrel absurd, noting that the two houses were fighting over a crown that had not existed for millennia. Yet the bitterness remained, and the mill's fate was one small thread in a tapestry of hatred that no peace could fully unravel.
