Ragman's Harbor is the teeming, foul-smelling waterfront district of Braavos, a place of crowded wharves, cheap inns, and brothels where sailors from a hundred lands mingle with cutpurses, mummers, and whores. It is the city's commercial underbelly, a world away from the stately Purple Harbor where the ships of the Iron Bank moor. For Arya Stark, it becomes a school of survival and a listening post for the Faceless Men.

A Marketplace of Sights, Sounds, and Smells

The harbor is defined by its sensory assault. The air is thick with the smells of fish, sour wine, smoke, and stale vomit. Its streets are lined with taverns like Pynto's, the Sailmender's, and the Inn of the Green Eel, each with its own distinct scent and clientele. The Foghouse is crowded with polemen arguing about gods and courtesans, while the Satin Palace is a quieter place of whispered endearments. The Ship, a mummer's hall, and the Happy Port, a brothel, are among the landmarks Cat of the Canals knows well. The area is also home to the Drowned Town, with its half-sunken spires and domes, a reminder of the city's watery foundations.

Cat of the Canals and the Blind Beggar Girl

As Cat of the Canals, Arya sells cockles, mussels, and clams for the fishmonger Brusco, pushing her barrow through the cobbled streets and learning the harbor's rhythms and its people. She knows the best places to beg and the safest corners to hide. Later, after her eyes are taken by the Faceless Men, she returns to the harbor as Blind Beth, a beggar girl with a shaved head and a mummer's mole. Her blindness forces her to rely on her other senses, and she uses her begging bowl as a cover to listen. She frequents different inns each night to avoid becoming a nuisance, and the soft-hearted pirate-turned-tavernkeeper Pynto often lets her sit by his fire, giving her food and drink while regaling her with tales of his youth.

A Listening Post for Secrets

The harbor is a rich source of intelligence. As Beth, Arya overhears conversations that reveal the city's secrets. At Pynto's, she learns from three Lyseni sailors that the ship Goodheart was seized by the Sealord's guards for carrying slaves—hundreds of women and children from Hardhome, a ruined place in Westeros. The Lyseni speak of another ship, the Elephant, that may have escaped, and of the rising price of slaves, with thousands more women and children still trapped at Hardhome. This information, which she reports to the kindly man, demonstrates her growing skill at extracting useful knowledge from the city's chatter. The harbor is also where she encounters the cat that follows her home, a creature whose eyes she can see through, a secret she keeps from the priests.

A Place of Transformation

Ragman's Harbor is the crucible where Arya's identity as Cat of the Canals is forged and then stripped away. It is a place of constant movement and change, where she learns to be invisible, to listen, and to survive. The harbor's chaotic, multi-lingual, and morally ambiguous environment provides the perfect training ground for a servant of the Many-Faced God, a place where a beggar girl can be a spy and a thief can be a source of vital news. It is a world away from the courts of Westeros, but it is here that Arya hones the skills she will need to return to them.
