Carmilla's Disappearance and Return

Laura had another disturbing dream, in which she saw Carmilla standing at the foot of her bed, bathed in blood. Waking in terror, Laura and the governesses found Carmilla's door locked and, after forcing it open, discovered her room empty. The entire household searched frantically, but Carmilla was gone. The next afternoon, she reappeared in her dressing room, claiming to have no memory of how she got there. Laura's father suggested she had been sleepwalking, a theory that seemed to explain the mystery, though Laura remained uneasy.
