The Carriage Accident

While Laura and her father were walking near the schloss, they witnessed a dramatic carriage accident. A traveling carriage, drawn by four horses, came thundering down the road, and the horses swerved at a lime tree, causing the carriage to overturn. A lady in black velvet emerged, and her daughter, who appeared lifeless, was lifted out. Laura's father offered assistance, and the lady, who was in a desperate hurry, agreed to leave her daughter in their care for three months. The young lady, who soon revived, was revealed to be Carmilla.
