Kullervo's Mother

Kalevala

Kullervo's Mother survives the destruction of Kalervo's people, bears the child who will become Kullervo, and later welcomes him when he returns to her. Her story gives Kullervo a surviving family bond amid his conviction that his kin have vanished; its final turn is another loss, when a messenger reports that she has died in anguish.

Identity and Survival

When Untamo's slaughter leaves dwellings, courts, and cabins burned or levelled, Kullervo's Mother is identified as the sole daughter of Kalervo to survive, carrying her unborn child. The account marks her survival not as an escape from the destruction's consequences but as its fragile continuation: the family line persists in the child she bears.

Kullervo is taken away when he is only a handbreadth in height and carried to a distant country. That separation shapes the later reunion: mother and son have been kept apart since his infancy, while he grows up without knowing that his family has survived.

Reunion and the Son's Mistaken Belief

When Kullervo speaks of avenging his mother's tortures and the troubles of his people, she answers that he is mistaken: his tribe has never perished. Her reply corrects the belief that has framed his desire for revenge. The people he thinks lost are not all gone, and his mother is present to tell him so.

Her welcome is tender and intimate. She addresses him as her worthy and beloved son, calling him her precious silver-buckle. The endearment makes his return more than a disclosure about survival: it is a recognition of the infant taken from her and now restored to her presence.

Maternal Love and Loss

Kullervo's Mother also speaks in answer to his question about falling on the field of glory and being lost from his race forever. She tells him that he cannot fathom maternal love or smother a mother's affection. The exchange sets the scale of her attachment against his expectation of permanent loss: his belief that he has been severed from his family cannot account for the persistence of her love.

That reunion does not endure. A messenger later brings Kullervo news that his mother too has perished, describing her death as anguished and broken-hearted and telling him to return home and honor her. The report turns the earlier assurance of family survival into a renewed bereavement. In the arc of Kullervo's story, his mother is both the witness who corrects his belief that his people are gone and the loved one whose death is ultimately announced after their reunion.
