Tuonetar

Kalevala

Tuonetar is the death-land hostess who receives Wainamoinen in the realm of Tuoni. Her brief appearance joins the formal gestures of hospitality to the threat of enchantment: she offers him beer in golden goblets, questions his arrival, and waves a wand of slumber over him.

Identity and Role

The narrative identifies Tuonetar as both the death-land hostess and the ancient hostess of Tuoni. She presides over a crossing into the realm of the dead, where Wainamoinen arrives neither dead nor dying. Her place in the scene is therefore that of a host who receives a living stranger at the boundary of death.

The Hostess’s Welcome

Tuonetar brings pitchers filled with strong beer and fills massive golden goblets. She presents the drink as the beer of King Tuoni and addresses Wainamoinen as an ancient minstrel. The welcome is ceremonial and imposing, marked by the scale and value of the vessels, but it takes place in a land whose hospitality carries mortal stakes.

Questioning and Enchantment

Tuonetar asks Wainamoinen what has brought him to her land. The encounter thus moves from offering drink to seeking an account of his presence. She then waves her magic wand of slumber over his head. The scene leaves her authority expressed through both the host’s welcome and the power to cast sleep, without specifying here what follows from the spell.
