Initial friction

The First Clash The Medal Cathcart and Korn give Yossarian a medal for going around twice, but they are angry about the loss of Kraft. Yossarian feels manipulated. The Promotion They promote him to captain to cover up the near-disaster. Yossarian is now a hero, but he knows the truth. The Resentment Yossarian begins to distrust his commanders. He sees they care more about appearances than lives.

The Bologna bomb-line incident

The Sabotage The Move Yossarian moves the bomb line on the map, causing the mission to be canceled. He feels a small victory. The Investigation Cathcart and Korn suspect sabotage but cannot prove it. They increase the missions anyway. The Escalation Yossarian's act of rebellion is a direct challenge to their authority. The conflict deepens.
