Late night, present day
Biff and Happy talk in their room
Upstairs in their childhood bedroom, Biff and Happy Loman discuss their father's deteriorating condition. Biff, who has just returned from working out West, is troubled by Willy's mocking tone and his own sense of failure. Happy, who works in a store, admits that Willy often talks to himself and that the family is worried. The brothers reminisce about their youth and their dreams, but their conversation reveals their own dissatisfaction: Biff feels he has wasted his life, and Happy is lonely despite his material success. They briefly revive the old fantasy of going into business together as the Loman Brothers.
