Childan awaits shipment
Robert Childan, owner of American Artistic Handcrafts Inc. in San Francisco, anxiously awaits a shipment from the Rocky Mountain States. He receives a phone call from Mr. Tagomi, a high-ranking official of the Trade Mission, who is upset about the delay of a Civil War recruiting poster he ordered as a gift for a client. Childan feels humiliated by Tagomi's condescending tone and the reminder of his lower status as a white American under Japanese rule. He agrees to bring alternative items to Tagomi's office at two o'clock.
