Childan prepares for appointment

Robert Childan locks his store and takes a pedecab to the Nippon Times Building. He has procured a rare copy of Tip Top Comics as a potential gift for Tagomi's client. During the ride, he reflects on the social hierarchy and his place as a white man under Japanese rule. He observes the city's neon signs and radios, and thinks about the German achievements in space and Africa, feeling a mix of admiration and resentment.
