Arrival and Deduction of Brunellus

William and Adso arrive at the abbey. At a crossroads, William astounds the cellarer, Remigio of Varagine, by deducing that the abbot's lost horse, Brunellus, took the right-hand path. He explains his reasoning to Adso: he read the horse's tracks in the snow, broken twigs, and horsehairs, and used his knowledge of how monks describe a perfect horse. This display of acumen establishes William's reputation as a man of great wisdom before they even enter the abbey.
