Night of the Fourth Day

Capture of Salvatore and the Girl

Bernard Gui's archers capture Salvatore and the peasant girl in the kitchen. They are found with a black cat and eggs, which Bernard interprets as evidence of witchcraft. The girl is arrested as a witch, and Salvatore is taken for questioning. Adso is devastated, but William tells him the girl is lost. This event gives Bernard a powerful tool to use against the abbey and the Franciscans.
