Departure and Aftermath

William and Adso leave the ruined abbey. They travel to Bobbio and learn of the Emperor's failing fortunes. William is disillusioned, realizing that his pursuit of order and truth has led only to destruction. He and Adso part ways in Munich, and William dies years later during the plague. Adso returns to Melk and, as an old man, writes this account of the 'wondrous and terrible events' he witnessed.
