Benno's Betrayal

William confronts Benno, who admits he took the book from Severinus's laboratory but then handed it over to Malachi in exchange for the position of assistant librarian. Benno has chosen power and access to the library's secrets over the pursuit of truth. William is disgusted by this betrayal of scholarly ideals.
