First Night Attack on Kino's House

Kino, suspicious, reburies the pearl under his sleeping mat. In the middle of the night, he hears a sound in the corner of the house. He attacks the intruder with his knife but is struck on the head and knocked unconscious. The attacker flees. Juana lights a candle and tends to Kino's wound. She urges him to throw the pearl away, calling it evil, but Kino insists on keeping it for Coyotito's future.
