Kino's Brush House Is Burned

Kino runs to his brush house and finds it in flames. Juana escapes with Coyotito, but the house and all their possessions are destroyed. The fire is a deliberate act by their enemies to force them out. Kino and Juana take refuge in the house of Juan Tomás. Juan Tomás agrees to hide them for a day, and provides them with food and a large knife for protection.
