Flight to the Mountains
After a day in hiding, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito flee La Paz under cover of darkness. They head north, following a rutted road. Kino is glad for the wind that erases their tracks. They walk all night, and at dawn Kino finds a hiding place in the brush. He carefully sweeps away their footprints. The family rests, but Kino is haunted by visions of violence in the pearl's surface.
