Kino's Canoe Is Destroyed
Kino goes to launch his canoe, only to find a great hole knocked in its bottom. The destruction of the canoe, his most prized possession and source of food, is a devastating blow. It symbolizes the complete destruction of his old life. Kino is now an animal focused only on survival. He does not consider taking a neighbor's canoe, as that would be unthinkable.
