After taking the pearl from Juana, Kino is attacked by unknown assailants on the beach. He fights back with his knife and kills one of them. The pearl is knocked from his hand and lies glinting on the path. Juana, recovering, finds the pearl and sees the dead man. She realizes their old life is over and that they must flee. Kino, dazed, learns he has killed a man.
