late that night, before dawn
Juana Attempts to Throw the Pearl into the Sea
In the darkness before dawn, Juana silently takes the pearl from its hiding place and goes to the beach. She intends to throw it back into the sea. Kino wakes, follows her, and catches her arm just as she is about to throw. He strikes her in the face and kicks her, then takes the pearl. This act of violence marks a turning point in Kino's character, as his obsession with the pearl overcomes his love for Juana.
