Kino Dreams of the Future
In his brush house, surrounded by neighbors, Kino holds the pearl and dreams aloud. He envisions a church wedding for himself and Juana, new clothes, a harpoon, and a rifle. Most importantly, he sees Coyotito going to school, learning to read and write, and freeing the family from ignorance and poverty. The neighbors are awed, but Kino feels a sudden fear of his own plans.
