Discovery of the Direwolf Pups

On the ride back to Winterfell, Robb and Jon find a dead direwolf with a stag's antler in its throat. The wolf had given birth to six pups before dying. The Stark children each take a pup: Robb names his Grey Wind, Jon takes the albino Ghost, Sansa names hers Lady, Arya calls hers Nymeria, Bran names his Summer, and Rickon's is Shaggydog. Jon's argument that the pups are meant for the Stark children because the direwolf is their sigil convinces Eddard to let them keep the animals. This event symbolizes the bond between the Starks and their wolves and foreshadows the coming conflict with the Lannisters (the stag).
