Matt “Tombstone” Magruder
AfterburnMatt “Tombstone” Magruder’s late scenes at Arsincevo and aboard a carrier show him moving between immediate battlefield coordination and senior shipboard command. At the ridge, he presses for equipment to be moved as the position comes under threat; by radio, he reaches Joyce “Tomboy” Flynn and asks for help getting his party to the beach. Later, when Jeremy Brandt transfers his flag to USS Shiloh, Magruder is left in command of the carrier.
Operational Role at Arsincevo
At the ridge west of Arsincevo, Magruder tells a woman to relay that the panels must be moved out. Her answer identifies the problem: the ridge is too exposed, and the group needs to move closer to the refinery or risk being flanked. The exchange makes the decision concrete. Holding the current position is not simply difficult; it leaves the party vulnerable, while moving toward the refinery offers a way to avoid being outflanked.
The threat is already audible. As Magruder and Natalie Kardesh approach General Boychenko, the ground battle ahead, on the ridge’s east side, is developing into the sharp rattle and crack of automatic weapons. Boychenko is conferring with officers over a map when he looks up to greet Magruder as Captain Magruder. The scene places Magruder inside an active command discussion, amid both a changing tactical situation and the practical problem of moving equipment from exposed ground.
Radio Contact and Mutual Support
Magruder also uses the radio to reach Joyce “Tomboy” Flynn. After hearing Dixie call out to check whether she is all right, he presses the transmit key and identifies himself. Flynn’s reply first confirms that she recognizes him; she then challenges his presence on the channel, referring to the incident at the palace that had required him to identify himself positively. The exchange shows that their contact carries an immediate procedural complication as well as personal concern.
Magruder gives Flynn his location: the back side of a ridge west of Arsincevo. He tells her that his group is having trouble getting through to the beach and asks whether she can help. Flynn agrees to see what she can do and requests his tactical situation. Their conversation turns a check on her condition into a request for assistance, linking her position to the ground party’s effort to reach the beach. Earlier, Flynn had described herself to Dixie as only a little singed on the outside; the brief exchange establishes that she is able to respond, without suggesting that she is uninjured or that the route has been cleared.
Command of the Carrier
In a later scene, Magruder pauses only long enough to shower and put on a clean uniform so that he will look the part, then assumes command from the ship’s executive officer. Jeremy Brandt has transferred his flag to USS Shiloh, leaving Magruder in command of the carrier. The detail of the clean uniform places the visible signs of office beside the practical transfer of responsibility: Magruder prepares to take the role, but the change in command is not presented as ceremonial alone.
Together, the scenes show the range of responsibilities attached to Magruder’s position. At Arsincevo, the concerns are immediate and local—exposed ground, equipment, the risk of being flanked, and a blocked route to the beach. Aboard ship, he becomes the carrier’s commanding officer after Brandt’s departure. The evidence establishes that shift in responsibility, while leaving the subsequent course of his command unstated.
