Reaping Day Morning

Katniss Everdeen wakes on the morning of the reaping in District 12. She finds her sister Primrose Everdeen sleeping with their mother, and the family cat Buttercup guarding Prim. Katniss prepares for the day by putting on her hunting boots and taking a gift of goat cheese left by Prim. She reflects on her life in the Seam, the coal-mining district, and her illegal hunting in the woods beyond the electrified fence. The day is tense because the annual reaping, where tributes are chosen for the Hunger Games, will take place at two o'clock.
