Meeting Gale in the Woods

Katniss meets her hunting partner Gale Hawthorne at their secret spot in the woods. They share a breakfast of bread, goat cheese, and blackberries, joking about the Hunger Games to mask their fear. Gale suggests they run away and live in the woods, but Katniss dismisses the idea because of their families. They hunt and gather, then trade their catch at the Hob, the black market. Katniss reflects on her friendship with Gale, which began when she was twelve and he was fourteen, and how they have become a team to survive.
