Encounter with the Avox Girl

During dinner, Katniss recognizes a red-haired servant as an Avox, a person whose tongue has been cut out for a crime. She recalls seeing the girl in the woods with a boy, both fleeing, before a hovercraft captured them. Katniss and Gale had watched but did not help. Peeta covers for her by saying the girl resembles someone from school. Later, on the roof, Katniss tells Peeta the full story, feeling guilty for not intervening. The Avox girl later cleans Katniss's room, and Katniss apologizes silently, feeling ashamed.
