The seventy-fourth Hunger Games begin. Katniss is on a metal plate in the arena, surrounded by other tributes. She hesitates to run for the Cornucopia, remembering Haymitch's advice to flee. She grabs a plastic sheet and a loaf of bread, then retrieves an orange backpack. A boy from District 9 fights her for it and is killed by a knife. The girl from District 2, Clove, throws a knife at Katniss, which lodges in her backpack. Katniss runs into the woods, escaping the initial bloodbath. Eleven tributes die on the first day.
