Dorothy Meeting the Scarecrow

Walking along the yellow brick road, Dorothy stops to rest by a cornfield and notices a Scarecrow perched on a pole. To her astonishment, the Scarecrow winks at her and speaks, asking to be lifted down. Dorothy obliges, and the Scarecrow explains that he has no brains and feels foolish. He asks if he can accompany her to the Emerald City so that Oz might give him brains. Dorothy agrees, and the Scarecrow joins the party, carrying her basket. Toto is initially suspicious but soon accepts him. This event adds the first companion to Dorothy's quest and introduces the theme of seeking what one lacks.
