The Arrival at the Emerald City

The travelers find the yellow brick road again and walk through a green countryside. They reach a high green wall studded with emeralds, with a gate. The Guardian of the Gates meets them and insists they all wear green spectacles to protect their eyes from the city's brilliance. He locks the spectacles on them and leads them through the streets of the Emerald City, where everything—buildings, clothes, even food—is green. They are taken to Oz's Palace, where a soldier tells them they must each see Oz alone, one per day. They are given luxurious rooms. This event marks the climax of the journey's first half and the beginning of the audience with Oz.
