The Cowardly Lion Joining the Party

As the group continues through the dark forest, a great Lion bounds into the road, knocking over the Scarecrow and striking the Tin Woodman. Toto runs to bark at him, and Dorothy, fearing for her dog, slaps the Lion on the nose. To everyone's surprise, the Lion admits he is a coward and weeps. He explains that he roars to frighten others but is terrified inside. He asks to join the party so that Oz might give him courage. Dorothy welcomes him, and Toto eventually becomes friends with the Lion. This event completes the quartet of companions, each seeking a different quality from Oz.
