The Council with the Munchkins

The Witch of the North and the Munchkins explain the geography of Oz: it is surrounded by a desert, and the only hope for Dorothy to return home is to seek the Great Wizard Oz in the Emerald City. The Witch kisses Dorothy on the forehead, leaving a protective mark, and tells her to follow the yellow brick road. The Munchkins bow and depart, and the Witch vanishes after spinning on her heel. Dorothy, now alone with Toto, decides to prepare for the journey. She puts on the silver shoes, packs a basket with bread, and locks the house behind her. This event formally launches Dorothy's quest and introduces the central goal of reaching Oz.
