The Deadly Poppy Field

The group walks through a meadow of brilliant scarlet poppies. The scent of the flowers is overpowering, and Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion fall asleep. The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman, not being flesh, are unaffected. They carry Dorothy and Toto out of the field, but the Lion is too heavy. They leave him behind, thinking he will sleep forever. Dorothy is laid on soft grass to recover. This event creates a crisis and sets up the next rescue.
