The Journey to the West

The travelers leave the Emerald City, their spectacles removed. They walk westward through untilled land. The Wicked Witch of the West, using her telescopic eye, sees them coming and sends a pack of wolves to destroy them. The Tin Woodman kills all forty wolves with his axe. The Witch then sends a flock of crows; the Scarecrow twists the necks of all forty. She then sends a swarm of black bees; the Scarecrow has the Woodman scatter his straw over Dorothy, Toto, and the Lion, while the bees sting the tin man and die. Finally, the Witch sends her Winkie slaves with spears, but the Lion's roar frightens them away. This sequence of battles demonstrates the companions' unique abilities and their growing effectiveness as a team.
